| ANDREAS GRUNERT was
born in Chemnitz Germany in 1947. He studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Stuttgart
(1969 - 75) and Vienna (1973 - 74). Grunert has received numerous honors, among them the
Scholarship Cite Internationale des Arts (Paris FRANCE, 1981), the Scholarship Chapter
Center for the Arts (Cardiff WALES, 1985), the Villa Romana Prize (Florence ITALY, 1986),
and a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha, Nebraska, 1998) . Since
the mid-seventies his work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in both public
and private venues in Europe and the United States. The gallery has represented Andreas
Grunert since 1984 and has given him five solo shows. While he lives and works in a village outside Stuttgart, Grunert travels widely and is well practiced in setting up studio in temporary quarters. He has occasionally worked in Seattle before a show. Grunert paints with acrylic on paper and canvas. Since he travels frequently, he is adept at finding and experimenting with regional materials. Much of the paper he uses is from local packaging and manufacturing outlets. Bodies of work are often characterized by the paper; for example, many pieces in the 1999 show are painted on a silver faced industrial paper Grunert found in a storeroom at the Bemis Center, the donation of a local business. Grunerts rigorous academic training lends formal support to his intuitive approach to painting. His work is characterized by an apparent off-handedness of gesture and simplicity of image. The loosely structured compositions and eclectic vocabulary of images make it possible for Grunert to skirt representation and narrative and lead the viewer into the incongruities of a dream state. for a current biography please contact Alison |
