ED MUSANTE
Born in Hawaii in 1942, Ed has established his studio in San Francisco after
several years in Seattle. He regularly shows in both places as well as New York, Santa Fe,
and several other west coast galleries. Musante studied art history at Berkley in
1965 and spent the rest of the 60's until 1970 in Niger, Africa doing public health
service work for the Peace Corp. In 1981 he received a B.F.A. from the Art Center
College of Design in Pasadena and continued to work there as an illustrator until 1983.
Ed continued to paint and in 1999 received an M.F.A. from the University of Idaho.
For many years Musante painted solitary animals and figures on a textured
background; they were mysterious and evoked an ancient world. He later worked
entirely with figures but handled them differently; while still very painterly, they
projected a "turn of the century" feeling in costume and setting. His
current work has moved back to the solitary animal; primarily exquisitely rendered and
soulful birds. They are painted on cigar boxes and book covers that offer a stature
and make reference to another time and place. |
