NANCI ERSKINE Born in Abington, PA in 1950, Erskine is a painter who also draws and makes monoprints to keep ideas current. After receiving her BFA from the University of Oregon and MFA from the University of Iowa in 1988, she lived and worked in Washington, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland; before arriving at Colorado State University in 1993, as an assistant professor of drawing. Each move taught her more about the intangible and ephemeral qualities that exist within anything, and to appreciate the evocative potential of color and time of day.

Her work has been in numerous national, juried and invitational shows for the past 20 years and has been represented by the Francine Seders Gallery since 1989. Awards include a 1998 Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship for drawing, and a 2002 Fellowship in Painting. Her work has also appeared twice in New American Painting ten-state Western Edition.

Artist's Statement

After many years painting structures in fictional and sometimes sinister environments, I was searching for a simpler and more ethereal subject to explore. While drawing an amaryllis at the same time that my only child was moving out into the world on her own, I was struck by the way the blossoms separated but remained connected. Other flowers have since begun to act as metaphors for emotions and interactions. I love how they enliven the space in a painting, and embody the gestures of the human experience.
