LAPITHS & CENTAURS
One
Version:
The Lapiths were
a fabulous Greek race from Thessaly. Some of
their offspring were Centaurs, having the torsos of men and the bodies of horses. Centaurs often attempted to carry off young Lapith
women, which led into fights. Such
mythological battles are depicted on temples in the Peloponnese and may be seen to this
day in Greece. |

Another
Version:
The Lapiths were
a civilized race of people who inhabited a region in northern Thessaly. The Centaurs were a race of creatures with the
body and legs of a horse and the torso, head, and arms of a man. They lived on Mt. Pelion in Thessaly, fed on meat,
and were creatures of brutal and lascivious habits.
The battle of Lapiths and Centaurs broke out at the wedding of Pirithous, king of the
Lapiths, to Hippodamia. The Centaurs arrived
drunk and immediately tried to seize the Lapith women.
A fight ensued and many Centaurs were killed.
Eventually, the Centaurs were driven out of Thessaly by the Lapiths and
settled in the Peloponnese. |
