MARC WENET was born in Chicago in 1955.  He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and received a BFA in 1978 from the University of Illinois in Chicago.  Since 1980 Marc has lived in Seattle, joining the Francine Seders Gallery in 1985.  Marc uses salvaged materials gleaned from his urban landscape such as old painted wood, rusting metals and other daily discards.  Much of his work is based on visual patterning that is rooted in formal and random systems.  His wall-mounted sculpture contains a quiet quality that invites introspection.

Artist’s Statement

Old painted wood, salvaged metal and found objects have been the foundation of my work for many years. I approach these materials by focusing on patterns and small details I encounter on their well-worn surfaces. Allowing my mind to expand on these elements I transform them into a form of visual poetry. In the end I’m searching for something that appears to have been there all along.

My work has been greatly influenced by the urban landscape. While growing up in Chicago I explored the mysteries of the city as they were expressed in its dirt and decay. Early materials were gleaned from the streets and second hand stores of the city becoming the seeds of inspiration for my constructions. Moving to Seattle provided me with a different environment to reflect on. More natural materials found their way into my work establishing a dialogue between what people have discarded and what nature has provided.

My most recent body of work has become increasingly abstract, introducing elements of color that were not present in the past. Working primarily in a small scale I’ve attempted to project a sense of simplicity and intimacy. I continue to explore the relationship between the lines and forms discarded by the city and the spontaneous expression of my hands.
