ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work is self-referential (about itself), and therefore about some of the thoughts, whims, longings and inspirations that went into it’s making.

I try to capture some sense of experiences I have had, or an experience I would like to have, or people I have known.  I make art with the intent of clarifying for myself the meaning of my original vision.  I want art that is beautiful, humorous and somehow self-evident.  The art should be its own justification.

I love decorativeness and the possibility that decoration can transcend itself; I use the word “transcend” cautiously.

Objects, materials or simple actions from my surroundings often present themselves as possibilities for art making.  The process of making is one in which I try to develop a greater understanding of why I am making what I am making, why I have chosen this way of making it, and what it might possibly mean.  The inspiration comes first, and then I try to locate its meaning.
