Mark Tobey was born in Centerville, Wisconsin in 1890.  He studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1908, but was largely a self-taught painter.   After moving to Seattle in 1923, he developed an interest in Asian art and philosophy, which influenced much of his work. He is regarded as the leader of the Northwest School of art and was very influential in the development of such younger painters as Morris Graves, Guy Anderson, and Kenneth Callahan.

In 1960 Tobey left Seattle forever and spent the rest of his life in Basel, Switzerland where he died in 1976.  In 1961 he became the first American artist to have a retrospective exhibit at the Louvre's Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.  In 1962 his works were shown in a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
